Fortnightly Focus – Grief & Loss
Grief is the natural emotional response to the loss of someone close.
It often involves intense sadness, feelings of shock and numbness and sometimes denial and anger.
Everyone will react differently, there is no ‘right’ way to cope. But everyone will need support.
Talking to someone grieving can be difficult but is an essential support tool.
- Say something – anything is better than nothing at all.
- Offer condolences in a simple and honest way.
- Be compassionate – ask them how they are feeling today.
- Let them know that you are there if they want to talk.
- Take your lead from them. They may want to talk in detail, or not.
- Use the words they use. (Died, passed, lost) This will make them feel more comfortable.
Listen. Be Patient and Compassionate.
Support is available for everyone experiencing or affected by bereavement.
