Policy Update March 2022

9 March 2022

Dear Parent

As things in college return to some semblance of normality we have been taking the opportunity to revisit various policies and processes. We are determined to ensure that students at Blessed Edward’s can learn in a safe and distraction free environment and have always valued the support that parents give us in this respect.

In order to prioritise the learning of students, the teacher may occasionally have to make the decision to remove a student from a lesson. The reasons for a student being removed can be varied and our teachers use their professional judgement to decide when this is necessary. I recognise that the vast majority of our students will never be in this position however I want to assure parents and students that we will always take a very firm line with any student who prevents other students from learning.

If a teacher decides that a student needs to be removed from a lesson, their parents will be contacted and the student will be detained after school that same day. I believe that the detention happening on the same day is important as it sends out a very clear message that it is not acceptable to disrupt the learning of other students. This is in line with guidance from the DfE and the college’s behaviour policy. It is important that we never take the good behaviour of our students for granted and as teachers, we must continue to praise and reward the many examples of positive behaviour we experience every day. It is with this in mind that I felt it was important to remind parents of how we deal with disruption to learning when it occasionally arises.

Thank you as always for your ongoing support and please do not hesitate to contact the college if you have any questions or queries.

Yours sincerely

Greg McClarey
